IT WAS a dra­matic start to the open­ing race on Day 5 of the Alice Springs Cup Car­ni­val at Pi­o­neer Park yes­ter­day.

For­mer NSW gal­loper Lad­well, mak­ing his Red Cen­tre de­but for the Mark Ny­han sta­ble, re­fused to en­ter the gates and was scratched.

As the field in the Peter Kit­tle Mo­tor Com­pany Hand­i­cap (1200m) jumped soon af­ter, jockey Paul Den­ton fell from his mount Har­mo­nium Bells, thank­fully es­cap­ing in­jury.

Man­hat­ten Prince (Ray­mond Vi­gar) at­tempted to run the field off their legs and led hand­ily at the 800m.

Snowtrooper (Stephen Ri­dler) pounced and looked the likely win­ner be­fore top­weight Ash Grey (Wayne Ker­ford) ar­rived on the scene to pip Snowtrop­per by a nose.
