Find ‘harmony’ with every stretch

- JACK PRICE

DARWIN’S largest yoga celebration kicks off today with free yoga classes and meditation sessions offered by local studios over two weeks.

Event manager Kalindi Marnell said the Yoga Day Festival offered something for experienced yogis and newcomers alike, and reflected the growing popularity of the practice.

“In the three years I’ve been in Darwin more classes have become available, there are more teachers and more studios,” she said.

“Yoga is for everyone, it’s just about finding the right part for the each person … if someone’s not ready for the physical side of things then they can try the meditation.”

Mrs Marnell said there were great rewards to be found in practising yoga.

“The whole idea of the festival is to showcase how yoga has so much more to offer than just physical bene- fits,” she said. “Yoga isn’t just doing the postures for an hour; it promotes harmony, which is something we need so much right now.”

Mrs Marnell also suggested Darwin had the potential to become a national yoga hub, given its climate and unique natural beauty.

“There’s a huge opportunity for that kind of thing – health tourism is growing massively around the world and we should definitely be able to tap into that,” she said.
