FROCK UP FOR THE CUP
Retailers urge revellers to buy Cup outfits to boost economy
THE first race day of the Darwin Cup Carnival got off to a flying start with about 1000 people making their way down to the Darwin Turf Club.
The race day was the first major event of the Dry and organisers are hopeful that as the carnival continues, more people will make their way trackside.
A lack of a fashions on the field competition did not stop Darwin’s fashionistas from frocking up, including trio, Charlotte Dubois, Hannah Makia and Tamika Andrews.
Ms Makia did a last-minute shop the morning of the race day to pick up her outfit after deciding she was going on Friday night. Yesterday she rushed to Casuarina Square and purchased a dress from Dotti and earrings from Lovisa. “Most of the time I like to buy from small businesses,” she said.
It was the first time the trio had been out since the lockdown earlier this year due to coronavirus.
“It’s good it’s actually cool weather, and it looks like it’s going to be a chill day,” she said.
“The last time we came out was for the St Patrick’s Day races and then everything sort of shut down so it’s nice to get out again.
“I like to come along, it’s something fun to do.”
Phil Coyle was at the races for his stag party.
Dressed in an op-shop get up complete with a white cowboy hat and lime green Hawaiian shirt Mr Coyle drew attention from across the marquee. “My mates dressed me,” he said.
The next race meet for the carnival, the Asian United Food Service Chief Minister’s Cup, will be on Saturday, July 11.
