Bears in Coast backyard

Sunshine Coast Daily - Caloundra Weekly - - LIFE EVENTS -

IF YOU’VE been out and about on the Sunshine Coast lately, you might have been surprised to see a giant bear.

That is, a giant bear puppet from Emma Middleton’s latest children’s picture book and performance of The Bear in our Backyard.

‘Mummy Bear’ is the star of the show in this celebration of motherhood and creative play, by Sunshine Coast children’s author Emma Middleton.

“I was thrilled to be awarded a publishing contact with Affirm Press, and after the success of the first book, The Lion in our

Living Room, we discussed a follow-on story,” Emma said.

“As the first story celebrated fathers, it was only logical that in the next book, we shine a light on the little miracles that mothers create every day.”

Emma loves to share the joy of storytelling with children and she has used her theatrical background to create children’s puppetry performances, based around the characters from her books.

Her performances are full to the brim with audience participation, singing, dancing and of course storytelling.

“The performances have offered me a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community,” Emma said.

Her next free public performance will be at The Cooroy Fusion Festival on Saturday, May 12 at 11am and 1pm, and then at the Buderim Hospital’s Teddy Bear Fair on Sunday, May 20 at 12.30pm.

“Puppetry is a wonderful way to awaken children’s creativity,” Emma said.

“I love watching the children’s faces as they respond to the animal characters.

“Story is also a wonderful way for children to express sentiments of love and appreciation, that they may not yet be able to articulate.

“Reading a book together that celebrates the many wonderful qualities of mothers, is a special bonding experience.”

Emma is also passionate about early literacy.

“I write rhythmical, rhyming stories, often with repeated refrains to assist children’s reading skills,” she said.

“We all know that reading to young children is one of the best things parents can do.”

Emma has also visited many schools and kindergartens in the Sunshine Coast and beyond. The Bear in our Backyard

is available in all good bookstores as well as online.
