Jamie fulfils his marathon feat
WARANA ultra runner Jamie Milne has completed a stunning 28 marathons in 14 days as he made his way around south-east Western Australia, walking into Perth Friday afternoon to complete a fundraising effort on behalf of Alzheimers WA.
However Milne has been left saddened after on Wednesday coming across the scene of a fatal accident on the Geraldton-Mount Magnet Road. The crash claimed the life of 57-year-old father-of-two Les James who was taking part in the WA leg of the Black Dog Ride Around Australia in support of people suffering depression.
Mr Milne arrived 20 minutes after the fatality.
Up to that point the Warana gym owner had been buoyed by the incredible generosity of people in the small rural communities he ran through, who offered everything from accommodation and dinners, with some shop owners refusing to accept payment.
He was welcomed to Perth by Alzheimers WA after earlier visiting a residential care home where patients are cared for in a home environment.
Mr Milne’s annual run for his Many Miles for Mary Charity, which supports dementia awareness, honours his late grandmother who died from the disease.
After setting out from Vasse in outer Perth on September 2, he has raised more than $10,000 and plans to close this year’s effort on September 30.
On Friday afternoon he completed the final 12km of his challenge at a leisurely pace, walking along the coastline into Perth after rising early.
In total he ran 1181.46km over the 14 days finding the first week the toughest.
“My body’s not too bad,” Jamie laughed. “The first week was tough going but it’s been quite good since then.
“I’ve been well looked after. People have treated us incredibly well. You see a lot of crap going on in the world but the balance is definitely there.”
