Bentley Quintet in concert

Sunshine Coast Daily - - LIFE -

THE Sunshine Coast Jazz Club will present David Bentley on October 14 with his acclaimed band.

The David Bentley Quintet comprises Bentley (piano and vocals), Andrew Shaw (acoustic bass), Nathan Goldman (percussion), Ric Halstead (reeds) and Annette Henry (vocals).

It’s a swinging, spirited and multi-faceted line-up that delivers original songs, revitalised jazz standards, cool blues and New Orleans grooves.

Now based on the Sunshine Coast, Bentley has many strings to his bow.

The award-winning pianist, formerly of Brisbane, and his band members have backed many jazz luminaries – among them the late great masters vibraphonist Milt Jackson, saxophonist Phil Woods and vocalist Mark Murphy.

The group performs frequently at Brisbane Jazz Club and has appeared at many music festivals, including the Queensland Music Festival, Crossbows, the Valley Jazz Festival, Brisbane Biennale and the recent Restrung Festival (where they performed Bentley’s original material with a string quartet).

As a songwriter, Bentley is best-known in Britain as the author of In A Broken Dream – a hit for his R&B group Python Lee Jackson in the 70s (with Rod Stewart on vocals). The track recently re-entered the charts as a remix, retitled Everyday, for Harlem rapper Rocky A$ap.

Bentley has recorded several albums of original material under his own banner. The latest, Everyday Songs, is available via his website at www.david bentley music.com.au. The jazz club gig on October 14 will be in the Pelicans Room at Caloundra Power Boat Club, Golden Beach, from 2pm. Cost: members $20, nonmembers $25, seniors/ U3A $22.50.
