Four close to earning selection
SWIMMING: There are high hopes the University of the Sunshine Coast Spartans will have four para-athletes at the Commonwealth Games.
Daniel Fox, Logan Powell, Black Cochrane and Ellie Cole are considered serious chances to feature at the Gold Coast next year, after swimming qualifying times.
To get berths, they need to be ranked within the top three Australians and within the top seven swimmers in the Commonwealth.
“We’ve posted times that put us up the top in Australia, so all things going well, we should have four people qualified,” coach Nathan Doyle said.
“We’re not calling it early but at this stage it would be very unlikely for them to drop lower than seventh.”
The club also has several able-bodied athletes who could qualify.
“We’re staring down the barrel of potential of having ... 10 Spartans in the Comm Games team,” Doyle said.
Doyle’s seven para swimmers were at the Gold Coast during the weekend for the Para Grand Prix.
Members of the squad will soon leave for the World Para Swimming Championships, which starts on September 30.
