Action needed before more lives are lost

Sunshine Coast Daily - - NEWS OPINION -

I TRAVELLED on the section of roadworks on the Bruce Hwy between Caloundra and the Sunshine Mwy.

On the motorway in the 60kmh zone I was tailgated by a motorist who overtook me and sped away. On the Bruce Hwy in the 80kmh zone I was passed by several vehicles all doing in excess of 80kmh, with some seemingly doing about 100kmh. On my return trip one driver could not wait to get past me in the 60kmh zone on the Sunshine Mwy and other drivers sped off as soon as they were on the two lanes of the start of the Sunshine Mwy, which is a 60kmh zone.

These drivers exceeding the speed limits in road construction zones have no regard for the safety of others or those working in the area.

Police should have permanent speed cameras installed to catch these speeding drivers, especially in light of the tragic accident that happened last week.

If a permanent camera cannot be installed then the police should target road works areas on a regular basis to make drivers slow down. I travel between Buderim and the south side of Brisbane once a month at night and am always overtaken by drivers exceeding the speed limit in roadworks areas. — DOUG BENCKENDORFF Buderim
