HOMES and businesses across Mareeba are glowing with the festive spirit thanks to brilliant light displays.

A gigantic Christmas tree and inflatable Santa with reindeers earned Bradley Claffey the top award in the Residential category.

Mr Claffey described himself as ‘a Christmas person’ and said he put a lights display up every year.

He spent five weekends in a row working on the display.

“I’ve always loved Christmas,” he said.

“Everyone loves the fact that I put in such an effort. I love seeing the kids get excited about the lights.

“I was really excited to win because there was some good competition this year.

Mr Claffey said he already had ideas on how to improve the display for next year.

“There will be some surprises,” he said.

“I wish more people would get into it. I doesn’t have to be big and spectacular, it’s more about showing the Christmas spirit.

“It doesn’t matter if you have one set of lights or a dozen sets.”

The La Rosas earned highly commended in the residential category for their display on Seary Road.

Their neighbours also got into the spirit, earning the group the best street award.

Tracy La Rosa said she has been putting up a lights display for the last 15 years.

“It’s about keeping the magic of Christmas alive and giving back,” she said.

“We are doing it for the community. We stay up late while everyone comes around.

“I’m so happy about the recognition for everyone in the street and all their work.”
