Coun­cil to dis­perse bats

MA­REEBA Shire Coun­cil will next week be­gin dis­pers­ing fly­ing foxes from trees in the Coun­cil Re­serve on the cor­ner of Stewart Street and Rankin Street, Ma­reeba.

Mayor Tom Gil­more said at this stage the dis­per­sal ac­tiv­i­ties would take place early morn­ing from Wed­nes­day, Jan­uary 18, pos­si­bly through to Fri­day, Jan­uary 27, weather per­mit­ting.

Coun­cil will have four em­ploy­ees us­ing non­lethal meth­ods from 4.30am to dis­cour­age the fly­ing foxes from roost­ing in the area.

“We need to start this early to pre­vent the fly­ing foxes from set­tling into the trees and they usu­ally start re­turn­ing to roost around dawn,” Cr Gil­more said.

“Coun­cil will con­tinue to mon­i­tor the area dur­ing this phase to en­sure the colony has not ex­tended fur­ther.”

Ma­reeba Shire Coun­cil would like to re­mind res­i­dents with pets in the vicin­ity of the dis­per­sal ac­tiv­i­ties to en­sure their pets are se­cured to re­duce the risk of es­cape.
