Council to disperse bats
MAREEBA Shire Council will next week begin dispersing flying foxes from trees in the Council Reserve on the corner of Stewart Street and Rankin Street, Mareeba.
Mayor Tom Gilmore said at this stage the dispersal activities would take place early morning from Wednesday, January 18, possibly through to Friday, January 27, weather permitting.
Council will have four employees using nonlethal methods from 4.30am to discourage the flying foxes from roosting in the area.
“We need to start this early to prevent the flying foxes from settling into the trees and they usually start returning to roost around dawn,” Cr Gilmore said.
“Council will continue to monitor the area during this phase to ensure the colony has not extended further.”
Mareeba Shire Council would like to remind residents with pets in the vicinity of the dispersal activities to ensure their pets are secured to reduce the risk of escape.
