Gators staying focused
THE Mareeba Gladiators have no thoughts of taking it easy in tonight’s final round of the 2017 Cairns & District Rugby League season.
The competition surprise packets head down to Gordonvale to take on Southern Suburbs with a view to honing their structures leading into the finals series.
With no chance of improving on their current second placing, the Gators could be tempted to rest their big guns and take no risks.
But coach Tye Ingebrigtsen was having none of that this week and aims to keep his men focused ahead of a historic finals run.
“We’ll be going in with a strong team for this one,” said Ingebrigtsen who is battling a bout of flu.
“We have two players out with niggles and hopefully we’ll have them back for the first week of finals.
“We’re really looking to put in a strong performance and give us some positive momentum heading into the first semi-final.”
With rumours a special training run in Cairns on Sunday was a roaring success, the 2017 Gladiators appear primed for a serious challenge at the premiership.
The Gators suffered a slight hiccup last weekend when they lost 40-16 to Ivanhoes after reportedly resting five players.
But confidence is high they can field a side close to full strength in Week 1 of finals.
The reserve grade players will be pulling out all stops to beat Souths and hope Kangaroos can upset Ivanhoes.
The Gators are currently sixth on the Reserve Grade ladder but can sneak into the finals if the above scenario plays out.
