Chess Club heads to Bris­bane to comepete in cham­pi­onship

THE St Stephen’s Ma­reeba chess team won the fi­nal round of the FNQ In­ter-school Chess Com­pe­ti­tion Pre­mier Divi­sion in Cairns and came home with the high­est scor­ing school for the year award.

The team con­sist­ing of Hunter Liebold, Aaron Bryce, Caleb Shorey and Bran­don Os­borne will now ad­vance to the State Fi­nals in Bris­bane next term.

Over 340 stu­dents com­peted at the tour­na­ment held at Trin­ity Angli­can School, White Rock in which St Stephen’s on 20.5 points beat Trin­ity Angli­can School on 17.5 points and Cairns State High School on 17 points to be one of two teams se­lected in the High School divi­sion.

The State Fi­nals will be held at Angli­can Church Gram­mar School in Bris­bane on Oc­to­ber 14-15, where the team will be look­ing to match their 2015 per­for­mance when they were named State Re­gional Cham­pi­ons.

In the Open Divi­sion, St Stephen’s 3 team (Liam Bak­saj, Eu­ge­nio Bam­bino, Dy­lan Cap­pella and Joshua Kievit) fin­ished third over­all with Liam Bak­saj tak­ing out third in the in­di­vid­ual com­pe­ti­tion.
