Certain future for bulk billing
MAREEBA has secured a bulk-billing service at Mareeba Hospital after two meetings were held this week with concerned community groups and stakeholders.
Amaroo Medical will be contracted to provide a bulkbilling General Practice (GP) Clinic at the hospital for nine months.
During that nine month contract Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) will put out tenders for expressions of interest.
Following the tendering process the successful tender will carry-out further GP bulkbilling services at the Mareeba Hospital.
KAP candidate for the state seat of Cook, Gordon Rasmussen, said this was a win for the Mareeba community.
“The important thing is that a bulk-billing service will remain at the hospital,” he said.
“Despite this win, the Save The Mareeba Hospital Group will continue to fight for services to be maintained and improved at the hospital.
“In a meeting on Thursday, CHHHS chief executive Clare Douglas said that GP services at the hospital will be maintained by Queensland Health now and in the future.
“Even if Amaroo win the tender there will still be a GP Clinic at the Hospital and it will be run by Queensland Health.”
Mr Rasmussen said the Save The Mareeba Hospital Group will continue to petition to keep vital services in Mareeba such as the sterilization unit, having at least one dialysis unit, a Palliative Care Unit and returning the Children’s Ward to its full functionality.
