Mareeba SS a sea of colour in Book Week

MAREEBA State School was trans­formed into ev­ery child's dream, with hun­dreds of story char­ac­ters com­ing to life to cel­e­brate Book Week.

Stu­dents and staff dressed up as their favourite char­ac­ters and showed off their colour­ful costumes at a whole school pa­rade.

Deputy prin­ci­pal Han­nah Sim­spon said af­ter see­ing a drop in chil­dren turn­ing to books, fo­cus­ing on learn­ing how to read and want­ing to reads books was so im­por­tant.

“Read­ing gives kids the chance to use their imag­i­na­tion,” she said.

“We want to get kids ex­cited about read­ing and we’re try­ing to make it fun.”

Mrs Simp­son said to con­tinue pro­mot­ing books the school ran a Big Day Out of Read­ing on Tues­day, with stu­dents from prep to Year 3 vis­it­ing sev­eral lo­cal busi­nesses where they read a dif­fer­ent book. Stu­dents en­joyed the event with the theme of the day was ‘Un­der the Sea’.
