Kids shed crocodile fears

Tablelands Advertiser - - NEWS -

By Bec Singh MAREEBA country kids had the joy of being up close with sea creatures from the bumpy saltwater crocodile named Chomp to the hard eastern long necked turtle named Sheldon at the Zoo to You marine-under-the-sea creatures exhibit.

The sea creatures on display were Chomp, Sheldon, a epaulette shark, a spider shell sea snail, a burnt sausage sea cucumber and a sea star.

Kids were able to touch the animals and ask questions while being educated about them by Zoo to You educator Rachel Zaicou.

Christine Chambers, a Mareeba local whose two children had attended numerous Zoo to You events, said it was an educational and fun experience for her children.

“This was the first time they got to see these creatures. They have been looking forward to this all week,” she said.

“I thought the whole day was really friendly and engaging. It was hands on which is great for the kids and good for them to see sea creatures for a change.”

Mareeba Shire Council library branch supervisor Wendy Rutherford said it was a fantastic roll out.

“It was very hands on and kids got to learn by touching and feeling the sea creatures,” she said.

“I hope Zoo to You can come back with their Australian Animal’s Tour.”

Mareeba Shire Council Library’s holiday activities will continue with a puppet show and craft activity on Wednesday September 27 from 10.30am to 11.30am.
