Repeat drink driver Vanessa Theresa Ann Kissick’s time spent in rehabilitation counted in her favour despite her lengthy driving history when she appeared in Mareeba Magistrates Court on Monday. While serving a suspended sentence, Kissick came before acting magistrate Raimund Heggie who said her driving history was atrocious. “The manner in which you are using a motor vehicle aggravated with alcohol leads to carnage on the roads,” he said. “We have to protect road users. You have not faced a harsher penalty today because of your time at Shanty Creek (rehab centre).” During a police patrol about 3am on March 2 Kissick was breathalysed and blew 0.113. Kissick was asked to provide her driver’s licence and she said she did not have it. Police checks revealed she was disqualified from driving in December, 2016 and she was driving without her learner licence. Kissick was sentenced to 12 months jail and her release date was November 6. She was disqualified from driving for three years and six months.
