Re­peat drink driver Vanessa Theresa Ann Kis­sick’s time spent in re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion counted in her favour de­spite her lengthy driv­ing his­tory when she ap­peared in Ma­reeba Mag­is­trates Court on Mon­day. While serv­ing a sus­pended sen­tence, Kis­sick came be­fore act­ing mag­is­trate Raimund Heg­gie who said her driv­ing his­tory was atro­cious. “The man­ner in which you are us­ing a mo­tor ve­hi­cle ag­gra­vated with al­co­hol leads to car­nage on the roads,” he said. “We have to pro­tect road users. You have not faced a harsher penalty to­day be­cause of your time at Shanty Creek (re­hab cen­tre).” Dur­ing a po­lice pa­trol about 3am on March 2 Kis­sick was breathal­ysed and blew 0.113. Kis­sick was asked to pro­vide her driver’s li­cence and she said she did not have it. Po­lice checks re­vealed she was dis­qual­i­fied from driv­ing in De­cem­ber, 2016 and she was driv­ing without her learner li­cence. Kis­sick was sen­tenced to 12 months jail and her re­lease date was Novem­ber 6. She was dis­qual­i­fied from driv­ing for three years and six months.
