Wakefield ready for Gators
NEW Gladiators coach Matt Wakefield is eager for the season ahead and is looking forward to his life in Far North Queensland.
Moving up from Coffs Harbour in NSW, Wakefield said the biggest challenge will adjusting to the climate.
“The biggest danger will be the humidity and getting used to playing in this heat,” he said.
“I have played in rural towns before where it has been very hot but nothing compared to the weather here.
“It is something to adapt to while playing, it will be character building.”
While coaching the Gators, Wakefield is looking forward to exploring Far North Queensland with his family.
“I can’t wait to see the reef, a saltwater croc, the islands and jellyfish,” he said.
“We have never been this far North, the turn off to Noosa is the furthest we have gotten.
“However, I am looking forward to explore Mareeba and the Tablelands.”
Exciting times lay ahead for the Gators with Wakefield bringing a fresh perspective for the club who will be aiming high for 2018.
“I not only want to better myself as a coach and player but work on making Mareeba a better side,” he said.
“It’s a chance as a development officer to help the juniors progress their skills to enable fresh talent to come through and to make the Gladiators a force.”
Finals are not the only focus for Wakefield, he said he wants to make a real impact at the Gators.
“I want everyone to better themselves and to progress and for everyone to bond together as a team and connect. I couldn’t have asked to move to a better club,” he said.
Gators fans should get their vocal cords warmed up and get their gear out of the wardrobe for the first training session on November 14 at 6.30pm Davies Park. To comment on this story: editorial@tablelandnewspapers. com.au facebook.com/tablelandsadvertiser
