BIG CHEERS TO BUSINESS OF YEAR
ATTENTION to detail proved to be the key to winning a number of awards for Mareeba’s popular pub the Gateway Hotel.
Business partners Callum and Nerida Foo and Chelley and Peter Howe walked away from the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce bi-annual Business Excellence Awards on the weekend with two awards for the night, Business of the Year and Best New Business.
It was just two of many awards that the pub has won thanks to its big transformation since they took ownership.
Following close to $2 million worth of renovations, the business has won the Best Small Commercial Garden award in this year’s Mareeba Heritage Centre garden awards as well as being runners-up in the Queensland Hotels Association award for best redeveloped hotel in Queensland.
They also won the Master Builders Award for the best renovated hotel up to $2 million initially in Far North Queensland and then Queensland as a whole.
Gateway Hotel business partner Callum Foo said they have achieved great things with the pub and that receiving all of the awards was humbling.
During the renovations, Mr Foo said their ideas evolved as they went along and they all couldn’t be happier with the outcome.
“The pub always had a lot of character and it is in the best position,” he said.
“It just needed to be rebranded and renovated with the addition of new facilities.
“The pub has dramatically changed. It was so old and we needed to start from scratch which has worked in our favour.
“We are happy and a lot of it comes down to attention to detail.”
Upgrades to the smoking area will be complete in the coming weeks and then they will start renovating their bottle shop to cater to a wide market.
Mr Foo said they will have a bigger selection of wines and beers available for purchase and will make the drive through more accessible to customers who want to browse.
All business owners thanked the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce, Mareeba Shire Council and the community for their support.
