SCHOOL DROP OFF ZONE DOS AND DON’TS

Tablelands Advertiser - - NEWS -

Parents often have questions about school zones, like: where can I park? How long can I park in this zone? Acting Senior Constable Haylee Campbell, Mareeba High School’s, school based Police Officer, (pictured) has answered some of the most frequently asked questions. “What does the Drop Off Zone on Jasper Street really mean?” This is a 2-minute drop off/pick up zone only. It is designed for parents to pull into this yellow marked lane to either drop off or pick up children before or after school. This lane operates from 7am - 9am and again from 2pm - 4pm. It is a 2-minute MAXIMUM zone. “Can I park my car in this zone during these times to run into the school quickly?” No, you must stay with your vehicle. You can get out of your car to help children get bags from the boot and say goodbye but you must then get back into your vehicle and leave the zone. “What do I do when the 2-min zone is full and cars are double parked?” Those vehicles that are double parked are not only committing an offence but are acting in a dangerous manner as the roadway is blocked to all other traffic. Keep moving and drive around the block until you can safely pull into the zone without double parking on the road way or find an alternate parking space. “Can I leave my younger children in the car while I duck into collect my child from school?” You are not able to leave any child under the age of 12-years without supervision.
