Takeoff closer for milk route

Tasmanian Country - - NEWS -

THE long-awaited green light for Tasmania’s first direct international freight link with China could be just weeks away, Qantas has confirmed.

The dedicated weekly Boeing 767 freighter flying from Hobart to Ningbo was first announced in 2016.

Qantas, which was meant to carry fresh VAN-brand milk, produced at VDL Farms at Woolnorth weekly, is still seeking regulatory approvals from Chinese authorities.

A Qantas spokeswoman said the airline hoped the deal could be confirmed soon.

VDL Farms owner Moon Lake Investments said it was still the company’s intention to fly VAN Milk direct from Tasmania to China.

The company said it would begin exports of VAN Dairybranded organic UHT milk and yoghurt the end of the second quarter of this year. It has agreements with two companies to manufacture organic UHT Milk and a range of yoghurt for the Chinese market.
