Can I Fly There?

PROBABLY NOT! Free | www.casa.gov.au/droneapp

- [ HARRY DOMANSKI ]

With the proliferation of more affordable consumer drones, it’s not surprising that there are ever-increasing regulations being put in place to temper their usage. This app asks the simple question ‘Can I Fly There?’ and is made by the Australian Government in partnership with Drone Complier, relying on information sourced from Airservices Australia. The essence of the app is a map showing your local area (you can drop a pin wherever you want information, or use your GPS location) with a visual representation of any restrictions and the radius that they affect. This entails an overwhelming variety of conditions and restrictions, a lot of which would be difficult to keep tabs on if it weren’t for a comprehensive app like this — an example being to only fly at an altitude below 45m when within a certain radius of a hospital (due to its helipads). Some extra useful information is provided as well, such as the local weather conditions, seven day forecast, and a host of links to information on further regulations.
