TECHNOLOGY IS FINALLY getting to the point where smarthome products actually work well enough for everyday use. They aren’t always cheap, though, especially for the cutting edge, like Google Home.

To help make the process a little more affordable, we’ve gathered up and tested 10 smarthome products that (mostly) costs $50 or less. While you won’t see robot vacuum cleaners or digital personal assistants, tech such as smart plugs can make your existing appliances a whole lot more useful. We also cover a range of smart LED lighting — though the popular, though pricy, Philips Hue bulbs don’t quite make the cut as the start kits cost well North of $100.

We also included some reviews of products that can be paired up with your existing TV, air conditioner or home security system to give them smartphone control. Loads of the products can be linked into services, such as IFTTT ( which allows almost limitless customisation. Many also work with Google Assistant, so be sure to check out our guide to building a DIY Google Home with a spare smartphone and a speaker on page 8.
