Lumosity has been around a while, claiming to train your brain with games designed to “improve memory, attention, flexibility, speed of processing, and problem solving”. Turns out, those are bogus claims, as a new study discovered. All that brain training apps like Lumosity do is make you better at brain training apps. 128 healthy adults were asked to play the games in 30-minute sessions five days a week for ten weeks and all of them got better at taking cognitive tests, with no effect on their cognition itself. A similar group, as a control, was set to playing video games to see if either activity enhanced decision making, and the result was... you guessed it, nah. Playing a brain-training app? Don’t waste your time unless you’re in it for the fun.
