ONE MAJOR PROBLEM with smarthome setups is the dumb tech you already own, but can’t easily get rid of. Take a split system air conditioner for example — it’s easy to control via remote, but unless you bought one fairly recently, it won’t have Wi-Fi support. KlikR aims to solve this issue with a smartphone-connected IR blaster, that can bring control of loads of devices over to your smartphone. It connects via Bluetooth (so won’t work when you’re out of range), and each KlikR can only control one IR device. While the unit has a database of remote codes, it can also learn them from your existing remote. The app itself is quite slick, and can control multiple KlikR units. It also has a range of smart options, such as voice commands, and being able to mute or pause TV or audio when you receive a call. The KlikR module has a replaceable battery, and lasts about six months in normal use. KlikR is available for $49 through Jaycar Electronics ( www.jaycar.com.
