Pigeon Pop

ONE-HANDED GAMES HAVE REACHED THEIR BEAK. Free | www.fortafygames.com

- [ PAUL TAYLOR ]

YOU CAN CHOOSE a number of birds in Pigeon Pop, but the titular avian will do just fine. Backed by a soundtrack that will have you involuntarily bopping your head, your chosen bird rotates around the screen while a cob of corn, pea pods or cluster of cherries rotates in the opposite direction. Tap the screen and the bird takes a peck at whatever you’re pointing it at. The enjoyment to simplicity index is thankfully in your favour, as blocks of TNT, insects and lasers (all somehow passing through the food manufacturing process) all help your efforts to clear up the screen. All Pigeon Pop truly relies on is coordination and a small amount of patience, as spamming the peck action can land you in strife if your sparrow takes a nibble of a rotten piece of food. Time is also against you, to a point, as the longer you take, the lower your score. Not that it seems to affect progress, and failing a level doesn’t really lead to any sort of punishment. Except for the ads. The ads! By god, the ads are a buzzkill, and they seem to get longer and longer every time they come up. Fail a stage a few times over — which can take a matter of seconds — leads to a 30-second ad. Skip it and you lose your reward, denying you the chance to unlock that peacock you’ve had your eye on for a while. Still, there is over 200 levels to master, and it’s worth giving a go. Just don’t let the ads put you into a flap.
