Goodwill gaffe

Bob Hoffman wanted to make his wife Linda’s dream to visit Italy come true, so each week, after they married in 2011, he stashed some cash.

‘One day I was going to say, “We don’t have to wish anymore,”’ Bob recalled.

In 2016 Bob hid the $10,000 he’d managed to secretly save in an envelope and placed it in the pocket of an old orange shirt he no longer wore for safekeeping.

In fact, it was such a good hiding spot, Bob forgot the money was there and bundled up the shirt with other old clothes to donate to their local op-shop.

Two days later, Bob realised what he’d done and told Linda.

‘Do you want me to ask how much money was in that envelope?’ she asked.

‘No,’ Bob replied.

The couple made a dash to the store and searched for over an hour, without luck.

But the next morning, a staff member called – they’d found the shirt and money. Overwhelmed, the couple threw the staff a pizza party – and banked the cash!
