$3000 in­cen­tive for over­com­ing work in­juries

WORK­ERS who have re­turned to work af­ter suf­fer­ing a work­place in­jury can win a $3000 prize for their ef­forts and de­ter­mi­na­tion through WorkCover SA’s Re­cov­ery and Re­turn to Work Awards.

The awards hon­our the achieve­ments of peo­ple who have over­come their in­juries to again con­trib­ute to their work­place as well as peo­ple and or­gan­i­sa­tions that helped them to suc­ceed.

Nom­i­na­tions in eight cat­e­gories for the 2011 awards close on Fri­day, May 13. Cat­e­gories in­clude achieve­ment awards for work­ers and ex­cel­lence awards for em­ploy­ers, case man­agers and re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion co-or­di­na­tors.

Last year’s Worker Achieve­ment Award win­ner, man­u­fac­tur­ing su­per­vi­sor David Goold, was hon­oured for his de­ter­mi­na­tion to re­turn to work af­ter be­ing in­jured while work­ing on a pal­let ma­chine.

His leg was dragged into the trol­ley loader and se­verely lac­er­ated from his hip to his ham­string.

He was trapped for two hours be­fore be­ing found by a co-worker and taken to a hos­pi­tal two hours away.

‘‘I en­joy my job and wanted to get back to work as quickly as pos­si­ble to show my wife and kids I was go­ing to be OK,’’ he says.
