Numbers in unions locked at steady level

membership in the private sector remains steady. Latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows 13.8 per cent of private sector employees now belong to a union.

ACTUsecretary Jeff Lawrence says uncertainty for workers in a range of sectors means belonging to a union is more important than ever.

He says its importance is reinforced by the figures showing union members earn, on average, 12 per cent more than nonmembers.

‘‘Workers face continued uncertainty in the times ahead with structural changes to the economy and workforce as a whole,’’ he says.
