Look for the common thread to attract talent

UNDERSTANDING what makes employees tick is the best way to attract top talent to an organisation, talent acquisition manager Stephen McSweeney says.

The AGL Energy manager, who is a speaker at the Australasian Talent Conference in Sydney later this month, says many job applicants have the wrong impression about working for his company.

Mr McSweeney says the development of an Employer Value Proposition has helped to increase engagement by 61 per cent in three years at AGL.

But when assessing how the company is viewed in the marketplace, misconceptions such as energy being a dull industry to work in have to be disproved, he says.

‘‘The challenge is to look for the common thread between all employees and nut out the true Employer Value Proposition of your organisation,’’ he says.

Companies can then use real staff, he says, to highlight the true work experience, such as through social media videos.
