WAGE subsidies of about $6000 will be paid to employers who hire and retain people who have been unemployed for more than two years.

The subsidy will be paid for at least six months, Federal Employment Participation Minister Kate Ellis says.

She says Job Services Australia and Disability Employment Services providers can use it as a tool to get more disadvantaged job seekers into work.

‘‘Wage subsidies that are targeted at the most disadvantaged job seekers have proven to be effective both here and overseas,’’ she says.

‘‘Over the next 31⁄ years, we expect to see some 35,000 very long-term unemployed job seekers placed into employment using this subsidy.’’
