CONTRACTORS are in high demand in the information, communications and technology industry in 2011, data reveals.

The Information Technology Contract and Recruitment Association says 80 per cent of all placements by its members were in contract roles in the first quarter of 2011.

Already 20 per cent of the ICT workforce are contractors.

Chief executive Julie Mills says investment in ICT projects will mean contract employment will continue to grow.

She says the increasing popularity of contracting is good news for companies, with chief information officers forecasting positive growth for the second quarter of 2011.

‘‘Contractors are going to be crucial to this growth, with the flexibility provided by contracting going some way to alleviate the skills shortages hovering over the sector,’’ Ms Mills says.
