Bonuses of­fer mixed re­wards

BONUSES have lit­tle ef­fect on the long-term per­for­mance of an or­gan­i­sa­tion, re­search by the HPO Cen­ter re­veals.

It finds if a com­pany does not have a re­ward pro­gram, its em­ploy­ees of­ten are not mo­ti­vated to im­prove their per­for­mance. But if re­wards are of­fered, staff come to expect it and con­sider it nor­mal.

It ad­vises that it is best for busi­nesses to have some form of re­ward pro­gram but not to spend a lot of time de­sign­ing an elab­o­rate sys­tem.
