CREATING easy beach living was the mandate for interior designer Cathy Jones when she and husband Trevor bought a 1960s Semaphore property about six years ago. During their tenure, the Joneses have rejuvenated the three-bedroom Albert St home.

‘‘When we bought it, it looked nothing like it looks now,’’ Mrs Jones says.

‘‘We wanted it to be a beach house, without being too precious.

‘‘We wanted finishes and furnishing that were going to be very easy to live with and so you don’t have to worry about coming in and out and wiping your feet every five minutes.

‘‘That’s really what we were after: a lowmaintenance, easy beachy feel.’’

The Joneses set about transforming the property, from floor to ceiling, inside and out.

‘‘What we liked about the house when we bought it – aside from the location, which is fantastic – was the fact that the layout worked very naturally for us,’’ Mrs Jones says.

‘‘We added on an ensuite, totally redid the gardens and the facade has been totally changed. ‘‘Everything inside is new, too.’’ The house now boasts an array of modern and organic materials.

At the front of the property is a sitting room that doubles as a bedroom and features french doors that open to a deck and private courtyard garden.

A good-size master bedroom features a built-in wardrobe and modern ensuite.

Towards the back of the home is the open-plan kitchen, dining and family room space.

The sleek, white kitchen boasts plenty of softclose storage, CaesarStone benches, quality appliances, Tasmanian oak floors and overlooks the dining and family spaces. An adjoining bedroom also could be a study. ‘‘It’s just a very comfortable house with a lot of white that makes it light and bright at all times of the day,’’ Mrs Jones says. ‘‘It has that really casual feel to it that we like.’’ At the back of the property, a screened alfresco entertaining area overlooks a totem garden and a sunken patio with built-in timber seating.

Other exterior features include a dual carport and a large shed with a studio space.
