In good company
This home has warmth, writes Katrina Stokes.
AMESSAGE lies above the front door of an Adelaide Hills property and almost 100 years later it still stays true to the family that lives there today. Written in 1917, the inscription reads: ‘‘Beneath this roof I trust you find welcome and good company.’’
With the message in mind, the owners of the character residence bought the home eight years ago with a vision to restore the property to its original state.
‘‘It still had beautiful bones – you don’t get anything built like this any more. It just needed a lot of love,’’ one of the vendors says.
‘‘We’ve kept all the original features. It was part of our passion to restore it back to how it was.’’
The owners gutted whole rooms, reroofed, rewired and replastered throughout.
It has taken the eight years they’ve lived there to complete the finishing touches.
Surrounded by an English-style established garden, a large, Jarrah veranda wraps around the home and holds many fond memories for the owners.
‘‘It was one of the aspects that attracted me to the home in the first place,’’ the vendor says.
‘‘The veranda is pretty special - we got married on it.’’
Inside, the home is split on three levels and features polished floorboards, original fireplaces, high ceilings and intricate cornices and ceilings.
The owners gutted and expanded the old kitchen and breakfast room, which is now a light-filled country-style kitchen and meals area. Also on this level is the master bedroom, which features french doors that open to a veranda, large ensuite, dressing room and adjoining bedroom or nursery.
On the lower level lies a games room, two bedrooms, bathroom and sitting room.
Two bedrooms and a bathroom are on the upper level, which would be an ideal space for children or teenagers.
Outside, as well as stunning gardens, there is an in-ground swimming pool.
Set within walking distance to Stirling Village, the owners say they like the area so much, they are not moving far away.
‘‘We love the village at Stirling – it’s unique,’’ says the vendor.
‘‘It’s a very special home. We’ve enjoyed restoring it and hope that the next family will appreciate all the beautiful features.’’ Address: 24 Old Mt Barker Rd.
