Too good to knock down
Inspiration and elbow grease rescued a gem, writes Ben Hyde. Recent sales
ABEAUMONT house advertised as a knockdown two years ago has been transformed into a young family’s haven. Vendors Liezle and Digby Hall say the purchase of this particular property was unplanned.
‘‘We’d been looking in Adelaide for about six months because we were based in Sydney,’’ Ms Hall says. ‘‘We just missed out on an auction that we had flown in for and this one had been passed in so we put in an offer on it.
‘‘It was actually advertised as a knock-down but when we got there and looked at the property, we thought it was too good to be a knock-down.’’
Drawing on their background in architecture, the Halls saw that the layout of the house and its orientation warranted its preservation. It just needed cosmetic improvements inside and out.
‘‘We’ve repainted everything, redid all the floors, did the bathroom, the laundry and basically everything internally,’’ Ms Hall says.
‘‘Outside we also painted and we landscaped the whole garden and Address: 15 Thirkell Ave. Type: Three-bedroom, renovated house. Now when neighbours walk past they always comment on how good it looks compared to what it did.’’
The property features high ceilings, polished floorboards and large picture windows to maximise natural light.
There are three bedrooms, including the master suite with adjoining study and dressing room.
The kitchen and bathroom have been updated and there also is a studio or home office.
A relocation to Sydney has forced a reluctant sale for the Halls.
‘‘We’ll miss the garden terribly and the brightness of the house, which you don’t really get in the inner city of Sydney,’’ Ms Hall says.
‘‘But we might return one day.’’
