Walk to town along Torrens
LIVING in a tucked-away area of Gilberton was perfect for Antonietta Bergamin, who says being close to parks and North Adelaide were her favourite things about living there.
‘‘It was great to be close to Linear Park, and a short walk to the city along the Torrens,’’ she says.
‘‘It was also good to be close to Melbourne St and the North Adelaide cafes.’’
Ms Bergamin, who is selling her Gilbert St shopfront/home, says the recent developments in Walkerville and the proximity to schools means the area is good for someone with children.
‘‘When I first bought this house I didn’t even know this area existed, you thought it was part of St Peters,’’ she says. ‘‘Walkerville Tce, there wasn’t much happening along there but in the last two years it has really come up, there are more shopping facilities, so it is great to raise a small family.’’
She says Gilbert St is a quiet street, and added that there are good public transport options available along Stephen and Walkerville terraces.
Information from RP Data and the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that Gilberton measures 1sq km, with three parks covering nearly 16 per cent of its area.
The median sale price for houses in June was $951,000, which is more than the $665,000 for the City of Walkerville council area.
The median price for units is $547,500, which is the same as the council area.
Neale Realty Kent Town sales consultant Raelene Schirripa, who is selling Ms Bergamin’s home, says Gilberton is an attractive suburb to buy in simply due to its close proximity to the city.
‘‘It is just five minutes from everywhere, you can walk to O’Connell St, or walk to the new Walkerville shopping centre,’’ she says. ‘‘It is like a little village.’’ She says there are a number of good schools in the area, such as St Andrews, Walkerville Primary School, and Wilderness, and added that Gilbert St and other areas south of Walkerville Tce are different to what people expect of Gilberton.
‘‘This part of Gilberton is a little gem, because when you think of Gilberton you think of Edwin Tce and the mansions, but over this side of town there are more cottages,’’ she says.
