Rural retreat a true home on the range
There’s room for kids, horses, cattle, sheep and chooks, writes Tom Bowden.
Arural retreat within easy commute of the city has been the perfect place for Vicki and Keith Goody to raise their children. The couple bought their Macclesfield home 13 years ago and Mr Goody says they wanted their kids to have an active childhood.
‘‘We wanted to bring the kids up in the country with a few horses, cattle, sheep and chooks and give them the realisation that there’s more out there than a bedroom and a computer,’’ Mr Goody says.
‘‘They could ride horses and there are fish and yabbies in the dams and we do canoeing and windsurfing on the dam.
‘‘We just wanted them to be kids and grow up and get a bit dirty and enjoy climbing trees and building forts and that sort of thing.’’
The house has four bedrooms, three with built-ins and the master suite has a walk-in robe and ensuite with shower, toilet and vanity.
The main bathroom features a fullsized bath, a shower and a vanity unit.
There is also an office, an openplan kitchen with ample cupboard and bench space, and a large family area.
There is a formal lounge and the home, being set on a hill, offers 360 degree views of the surrounding hills.
‘‘The views are amazing and in summer it’s so relaxing sitting outside, overlooking the dam,’’ Mr Goody says.
‘‘In winter everything around us is just a vivid green and it’s beautiful, but we love it that we have seasons up here and it’s great to watch the landscape change.
‘‘It’s a very secluded spot and it’s tucked away in the ranges.’’
The Goodys have bred horses on the property for the past 12 years and Mr Goody says the property features plenty of supportive infrastructure including shedding, workshops, three dams and easy access to plenty of water.
‘‘It’s a terrific retreat and it would be a great hobby farm, but now the kids have grown up and moved out so we’re looking at downsizing,’’ Mr Goody says.
Mr Goody says he will miss the home’s tranquility and birdlife, and says that it is an easy drive into the city.
‘‘I travel to the city each day and it is a very quick, easy and relaxing drive,’’ he says.
