Dunk’s for the memories
A design inspired by a Queensland resort, writes Tom Dougherty.
THE INSPIRATION for the renovation of a bluestone Parkside villa came from a Queensland resort, vendor Andrew Doley says. ‘‘We had a couple of trips up to Dunk Island in Queensland, they had a great plantation bar up there with high windows, high ceilings and big fans,’’ he says.
‘‘That was the inspiration, we also liked the warehouse-style of living, we have high ceilings with a lower bulkhead in between to try to create a warehouse-type space.’’
Most of the back section part of the home is taken up by an open-plan kitchen, family and dining room with polished timber floors and ceiling fans.
The kitchen has an island bench with a breakfast bar, granite benches, stainless steel appliances, and a 900mm-wide oven.
‘‘The kitchen is great, we designed the renovation around it because that is where we spend nearly all of our time,’’ he says.
‘‘We didn’t want a stove or a sink in that island bench, we just wanted a big, clear space, that’s 3.3m long in granite.’’
Bi-fold doors in the dining area open out to a covered entertaining area, which has a ceiling fan.
‘‘It was designed for entertaining; it’s good to have the family around and sit outside, the nice thing about that area is it is quite cool, even during the hot weather,’’ Mr Doley says.
‘‘It’s really pleasant out there even when it is over 40C, it is really quite good.’’
It looks on to an inground pool, and there is also a sliding glass door in the family room that opens to the pool and lawn area at the back. In the original part of the house are three bedrooms with ceiling fans.
The master features a walk-in robe and an ensuite with a shower.
The other two bedrooms have french doors that open out to the veranda.
There is also another bedroom situated in the extension, a bathroom with a bath and a shower, and a laundry with external access.
Other features of the home include a double garage with an automatic door, a solar-panel system, and ducted reverse-cycle airconditioning.
‘‘It is very convenient with the floors; it has Western Australian blackbutt polished floors throughout, they’re beautiful. We find that very warm in winter and cool in summer,’’ Mr Doley says.
