Stephen Pan­nell, W i n e m a k e r, S C P a n n e l l This McLaren Vale wine­maker picked up a well-earned gong for his gre­nache in the James Hal­l­i­day Wine Com­pan­ion Awards – a timely win just ahead of In­ter­na­tional Gre­nache Day on Septem­ber 19. He re­cently opened his cel­lar door on Oliv­ers Rd in McLaren Vale. My favourite SA wine (not my own) is... Wen­douree 99 Caber­net, Mal­bec or Shi­raz/Mataro. My best han­gover cure is... Be­rocca be­fore you start; heaps of wa­ter dur­ing; two Panadol be­fore you go to bed. The best wine I've ever drunk is... ’45 Mau­rice O’Shea, ’78 Domaine de la Ro­ma­nee-Conti La Tache, ’89 Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape, 01 Château d'Yquem, ’91 Wen­douree Shi­raz, 1907 Château La­tour and a 1778 Ar­magnac. My bucket list wine is... Mon­tra­chet or ’96 Barolo – most of them! My first glass of wine was... a d’Yquem, prob­a­bly a 1960s vin­tage, when I was 13 years old, at Christ­mas. The SA restau­rants with the best wine lists are... Fer­men­tAsian, Fino and Press are the most in­ter­est­ing. Is $785 for a bot­tle of Grange good value? No, be­cause no wine is worth that much money for me. I think the con­cept of value stops at any­thing more than $50, above which wine is a luxury item. If I could never drink wine again I’d drink... Beer and gin (not mixed!) My last sup­per would be... with my fam­ily. A mix of lob­ster with great chardon­nay, Ag­nolotti Del Plin and Neb­bi­olo, Mas­saman curry and a Wen­douree any­thing. Fin­ish this sen­tence. Wine is… my life. It takes me back to where I ate, the peo­ple I ate with, the sound, the smells, the scenery. It’s like be­ing trans­ported back in time!
