ON THE GRILL
Stephen Pannell, W i n e m a k e r, S C P a n n e l l This McLaren Vale winemaker picked up a well-earned gong for his grenache in the James Halliday Wine Companion Awards – a timely win just ahead of International Grenache Day on September 19. He recently opened his cellar door on Olivers Rd in McLaren Vale. My favourite SA wine (not my own) is... Wendouree 99 Cabernet, Malbec or Shiraz/Mataro. My best hangover cure is... Berocca before you start; heaps of water during; two Panadol before you go to bed. The best wine I've ever drunk is... ’45 Maurice O’Shea, ’78 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tache, ’89 Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape, 01 Château d'Yquem, ’91 Wendouree Shiraz, 1907 Château Latour and a 1778 Armagnac. My bucket list wine is... Montrachet or ’96 Barolo – most of them! My first glass of wine was... a d’Yquem, probably a 1960s vintage, when I was 13 years old, at Christmas. The SA restaurants with the best wine lists are... FermentAsian, Fino and Press are the most interesting. Is $785 for a bottle of Grange good value? No, because no wine is worth that much money for me. I think the concept of value stops at anything more than $50, above which wine is a luxury item. If I could never drink wine again I’d drink... Beer and gin (not mixed!) My last supper would be... with my family. A mix of lobster with great chardonnay, Agnolotti Del Plin and Nebbiolo, Massaman curry and a Wendouree anything. Finish this sentence. Wine is… my life. It takes me back to where I ate, the people I ate with, the sound, the smells, the scenery. It’s like being transported back in time!
