Some people look at things that are, and ask why – others look at things that never were, and ask: why not? I’m paraphrasing George Bernard Shaw, but his words are surely relevant for two of our stories today.

Take Erin Phillips. They told her as a teenager she couldn’t play footy, but – after a career as a basketball champion – she starred in the inaugural AFLW season.

Then they said she couldn’t marry the girl she loved. Why not? She wed in the US. Now she’s got twins, is involvedvo ved in bot both spo sports,ts, a and d lives in two countries.

There’s also SA burns surgeon John Greenwood and Bali burns victim and campaigner Julian Burton, who saw people die who should not have. Why not create a worldfirst artificial skin that will make painful grafts a thing of the past?

Why not indeed? It’s inspiring all round.
