International chef shuffling for Jock
ADELAIDE chef Jock Zonfrillo has been handpicked for a groundbreaking project in which culinary stars from around the globe swap restaurants for a night.
The Restaurant Orana owner and MasterChef guest star, above, is one of only two Australians in the line-up alongside the likes of Rene Redzepi (Noma, Denmark), Alex Atala (DOM, Brazil), Massimo Bottura (Osteria Francescana, Italy) and Andoni Luis Aduriz (Mugaritz, Spain) who all have restaurants ranked in the world’s best 10. The other Aussie chef is Ben Shewry of Attica in Melbourne.
In all 37 chefs have signed up to take part in “The Grand Gelinaz Shuffle” in which each will cook a dinner, simultaneously, on July 9.
They will travel to their destination, which has been selected by lottery, without supplies or staff, and will have three days to work with the host kitchen to prepare an eight-course meal.
They will even live in the home of their colleagues as they’re work elsewhere.
Tickets for all restaurants will go on sale on May 13 but diners won’t know which chef has taken over the kitchen until after the meal.
Orana was The Advertiser Restaurant of the Year for 2014, recognised for its use of native ingredients in stunning set-piece dinners.
Jock, who also stars in his own Discovery TV show Nomad Chef, says he’s thrilled to take part in the project, which was developed by French-based food writer Andrea Petrini and film producer Alexandra Swenden. “Getting a bunch of the world’s best chefs and shuffling them up is a great idea,” he says. “It’s very humbling to be considered to be one of those 37. And it’s good to get Adelaide on the map gastronomically to get some of the dollars travelling through here, and not just Sydney and Melbourne.”
