Loave-some bread strike

THIS week in 1974, South Aus­tralians were in the grip o of an 11-day bread strike o over bak­ers’ wages. Ac­cord­ing to a front­page re­port in The Ad­ver­tiser on Septem­ber 27, t the strike of more than 800 of SA’s bak­ing trade em­ploy­ees ended on the evening of Septem­ber 26: “The strike re­sulted in bak­ing trader work­ers win­ning a $12.50 weekly pay rise on top of the $6 granted re­cently in the SA In­dus­trial Com­mis­sion,” the pa­per re­ported. The strike meant only about a quar­ter of the usual bread sup­ply was avail­able and peo­ple were lined up around the corner try­ing to buy their loaves.
