In the previews for Hugh Jackman’s new movie, a song was played which sounded like it was performed by Johnny Cash. Can you tell me more? – A. R. (Forestville)

The song is called Hurt. It was composed and originally performed by US industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, featuring on the album The Downward Spiral, released in March 1994. The song itself was released as a promotional single in April 1995.

Several years later, Hurt was reworked by American country and gospel singer Johnny Cash into an acoustic rock song. It was featured on his album American IV: The Man Comes Around, which was released in November 2002.

The song was released as a single in March 2003.

They proved to be Cash’s final album and single before his death in September 2003. The lyrics are as follows: I hurt myself today/ To see if I still feel./ I focus on the pain,/ The only thing that’s real./ The needle tears a hole,/ The old familiar sting./ Try to kill it all away,/ But I remember everything.//

What have I become,/ My sweetest friend?/ Everyone I know goes away/ In the end./ And you could have it all./ My empire of dirt./ I will let you down./ I will make you hurt.//

I wear this crown of thorns/ Upon my liar’s chair./ Full of broken thoughts/ I cannot re- pair./ Beneath the stains of time,/ The feelings disappear./ You are someone else./ I am still right here.//

What have I become,/ My sweetest friend?/ Everyone I know goes away/ In the end./ And you could have it all./ My empire of dirt./ I will let you down./ I will make you hurt.//

If I could start again,/ A million miles away,/ I would keep myself./ I would find a way.// Where to write
