Women’s TDU shines as Spratt wins crown
AFTER powering 400km along some of SA’s most picturesque but brutal roads, Amanda Spratt has won the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under, which burst on to the scene this year with growing crowds and more international teams.
In an action-packed finale, Chloe Hosking won yesterday’s final stage, a 46km sprint course around the Adelaide parklands, but Spratt prevailed with the best overall time.
Hosking made a perfectly timed move in the criterium, while fellow Australian Spratt survived a mid-race crash to claim the tour honours.
The green sprinter’s jersey also went to Spratt.
More than 100 women from all over the world competed in the Tour, travelling through 32 towns. Yesterday more than 100,000 people gathered in Adelaide CBD to watch the men and women compete.
South Australia’s Annette Edmondson won the 115.7km first stage, catching Uni SAAustralia’s Rachel Neylan in the final 5km. Stage 2 went to Katrin Garfoot while eventual winner Spratt won Stage 3.
In Stage 4, Hosking unleashed her powerful sprint to win from Italian Giorgia Bronzini and Edmondson. PAGES 50, 51: COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE OF ALL THE RACE ACTION IN SPORT
