Lawyer holds on to Libs’ purse strings

THE em­bat­tled eastern sub­urbs lawyer in charge of the Lib­eral Party’s fi­nances has been re-elected for an­other 12month stint de­spite con­cerns about his busi­ness deal­ings.

John Kain, 51, has faced ques­tions over his chair­man- ship of be­sieged fund man­ager Blue Sky Al­ter­na­tive In­vest­ment. But Mr Kain, the founder of Kain Lawyers, will con­tinue con­trol­ling party cof­fers.

Its state ex­ec­u­tive last week unan­i­mously voted the widely re­spected lawyer, of Toorak Gar­dens, to con­tinue as its vol­un­tary state trea­surer.

Lib­eral sources have said frus­trated party “chat­ter” cen­tred on the “op­tics” his po­ten­tial busi­ness prob­lems pose be­fore next year’s Fed­eral Elec­tion. Mr Kain de­clined to com­ment.
