El­len­brook teen wins art award.

EL­LEN­BROOK teenager Sa­hara Du Pont has won the Jes­sica Shaw Youth Award at the El­len­brook Art Awards.

The 17-year-old was among 149 other artists who en­tered art work for the awards, which were held last week.

More than 200 peo­ple at­tended the awards night and the opening of the ex­hi­bi­tion, which will show­case all of the nom­i­nated art­work.

El­len­brook Arts ex­ec­u­tive di­rec­tor Matt Sivyer said the night was a huge suc­cess and show­cased so much of the ta­lent in WA.

“There is some­thing quite special be­ing sur­rounded by art­works, which col­lec­tively rep­re­sent thou­sands of hours of labour,” he said. “Be­hind each art­work lies a story and when I was col­lat­ing th­ese for the online cat­a­logue on our web­site, I was blown away by some of the tales of in­spi­ra­tion, love and loss.”

Artists en­tered work in four cat­e­gories for youth, painting, pho­tog­ra­phy and mixed me­dia, as well as the City of Swan prize, which was awarded to Gu­undie Kuch­ling for B is for Bi­b­lio­philic and Most Out­stand­ing Work, which was awarded to Jodie El­lis for Care taker.

Du Pont won for her work Trea­sures, which she also sold on the night.

Mr Sivyer said it was quite the prof­itable night for a teenager, re­ceiv­ing a prize cheque, as well as sell­ing the work. The ex­hi­bi­tion is on un­til Oc­to­ber 8 at El­len­brook Arts.
