City blocks phone towers

THE FIGHT ISN’T OVER YET THOUGH

The Advocate (Perth) - - NEWS - Lisa Thomas

CITY of Swan council refused to approve two telecommunication towers proposed for the Swan Valley after significant community concern.

Councillors unanimously voted against the two towers – one an Optus tower planned for Middle Swan and the other an NBN tower in Millendon.

Cr Darryl Trease put forward a motion to refuse the tower on Hardwick Road in Millendon on Wednesday night at the ordinary council meeting.

He said the tower would have an adverse impact on nearby residents.

“Essentially, I’m supporting the residents. These towers are quite intrusive and I’m sick and tired of NBN putting towers wherever they like and having no regard for the impact on residents,” he said.

“I understand there is a need for these towers, but I think more thought needs to go into where they go, so they are less intrusive to residents.”

The application for the NBN tower in Millendon will now go to a hearing at the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT) in November.

Resident David Hughes, who has been battling the Millendon tower for more than a year, said he was happy to have the council’s support.

“It’s the right ending to a hardfought battle, but it’s nowhere near finished yet,” he said.

“It’s nice to have the council’s support, but we will see what happens at the SAT hearing.

“For me, it’s still an ongoing battle that I have ahead of me.”
