AN Ellenbrook resident will take part in the Alzheimer’s WA Walk to Remember this Sunday to honour those who have been lost to the disease.

Daniela DeSouza’s father died in June after eight years of living with Alzheimer’s.

She said watching him deteriorate over that time was devastating and she wanted to ensure other families wouldn’t have the same experience.

“It affected my family emotionally and socially, watching the person we loved slowly deteriorate over time,” she said.

“To lose Dad in June this year inspired me to walk and raise funds for Alzheimer’s WA and families going through dementia with loved ones,” she said.

Ms DeSouza said her experience with Alzheimer’s WA had also made her want to take part.

She said the organisation had helped provide information and support on how to care for her father and how to adapt the home environment for the safety of both her parents.

“Dementia affects so many families in WA and the funds raised enables Alzheimer’s WA to work closer with those who live with dementia and support their carers and families throughout the difficult time,” she said.

Alzheimer’s WA is aiming to raise $100,000 this year.

Ms DeSouza said it was amazing to walk alongside so many people, all with a common goal.

“I want to raise money and awareness so other families have more knowledge on the disease and hopefully one day a cure,” she said. “(My father) touched so many hearts throughout his life and I think it’s amazing that we are coming together to remember Dad.”

The Walk to Remember will take place this Sunday at Perry Lakes Reserve from 7.30am.
