Ready for a bar fight

The Advocate (Perth) - - FRONT PAGE -

A WEST Swan resident is fighting plans to build a tavern next door to his rural property.

Geoff D’Cruz and a number of local residents have started the group Stop the Tavern in an attempt to stop the proposed tavern being built on lot 11 and 22 West Swan Road.

The group has also set up a gofundme page to raise money to pay for a professional town planner to assist with objections to the development.

Mr D’Cruz said the proposed tavern would create noise, traffic and safety concerns. He said the proposal affected everyone in the area and would set a precedent.

“When I decided to employ a consultant, I decided to put my money where my mouth is, but this will affect many people and it’s going to be a large cost, so it would be great if other people could help out,” he said.

“The money will only be used to pay the town planner and any additional funds will be donated to the Native Animal Rescue in Malaga.”

The proposed tavern will be a single-storey 677sq m building and include a 205sq m lounge and bar area, with a 52sq m external bar.

The tavern will be open seven days a week, include a playground and 94 car bays.

Mr D’Cruz said the proposed tavern did not fit with the rural lifestyle and would create antisocial behaviour.

“The greatest concerns I have are security and anti-social behaviour, traffic hazards, and light and noise pollution to the immediate and broader neighbourhood,” he said.

Submissions for the public comment period ended yesterday. The item will go to the council at a later date.
