New Mayor’s vow on ‘rig­or­ous de­bate’

LONG-TIME coun­cil­lor David Lu­cas has taken over the reigns as City of Swan Mayor af­ter be­ing elected last Mon­day in a spe­cial coun­cil meet­ing.

Cr Lu­cas, who re­places Mick Wain­wright, nom­i­nated for the po­si­tion along with Kevin Bai­ley and won a bal­lot 10-4.

Coun­cil­lor Bai­ley was deputy mayor.

Mr Wain­wright was out of the race af­ter fail­ing to be re-elected as a coun­cil­lor in Swan’s Al­tone ward in last week’s lo­cal gov­ern­ment elec­tion.

He had served 12 years on the coun­cil.

He said he felt priv­i­leged to have been elected mayor by his fel­low coun­cil­lors.

“My aim is to pro­vide strong, but fair lead­er­ship for elected mem­bers, city staff and the res­i­dents and busi­ness com­mu­nity of the City of Swan,” he said.

He en­cour­aged open and rig­or­ous de­bate “with­out fear or favour, to help en­sure the best de­ci­sions are made for the ben­e­fit of the com­mu­nity”.

“I will fo­cus on mak­ing the City of Swan a leader in lo­cal gov­ern­ment through our at­ti­tude and will­ing­ness to en­gage with our com­mu­nity and drive re­form.

The new coun­cil’s first or­di­nary meet­ing will be on Novem­ber 15.
