New Mayor’s vow on ‘rigorous debate’
LONG-TIME councillor David Lucas has taken over the reigns as City of Swan Mayor after being elected last Monday in a special council meeting.
Cr Lucas, who replaces Mick Wainwright, nominated for the position along with Kevin Bailey and won a ballot 10-4.
Councillor Bailey was deputy mayor.
Mr Wainwright was out of the race after failing to be re-elected as a councillor in Swan’s Altone ward in last week’s local government election.
He had served 12 years on the council.

He said he felt privileged to have been elected mayor by his fellow councillors.
“My aim is to provide strong, but fair leadership for elected members, city staff and the residents and business community of the City of Swan,” he said.
He encouraged open and rigorous debate “without fear or favour, to help ensure the best decisions are made for the benefit of the community”.
“I will focus on making the City of Swan a leader in local government through our attitude and willingness to engage with our community and drive reform.
The new council’s first ordinary meeting will be on November 15.
